The first global standard for artificial intelligence management, ISO 42001, was released in October 2023 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), providing guidelines for designing, building, implementing, and continually improving an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS) that can be independently certified for assurance.

 Organizations utilizing AI services in their operations, such as advanced language models and chatbots, or those developing AI products, can use ISO 42001 to establish policies, procedures, and objectives for AI systems; ensure transparency, accountability, and explainability in AI decision-making; identify and mitigate bias in AI algorithms; and safeguard user privacy and data security.
